Sarnath Gains UNESCO World Heritage Status
India’s rich cultural heritage has received another major international recognition with the Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The decision was announced on July 25, 2026, during the 48th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.
The inscription takes India’s total number of UNESCO World Heritage properties to 45, comprising 37 cultural, seven natural and one mixed property. With this addition, India ranks sixth globally and second in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of the number of World Heritage properties.
Why Sarnath Is Historically Significant
Located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is one of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites associated with the life of Gautama Buddha. Known historically as Rishipatana, Ishipatana and Mrigadava, the site is traditionally regarded as the place where Buddha delivered his first sermon in the 6th century BCE.
The sermon, known as Dharmachakra Pravartana, or the “Turning of the Wheel of the Law”, marked the beginning of the Buddhist Sangha and established the principles of the Noble Eightfold Path.
The UNESCO inscription covers two connected components: the Chaukhandi Stupa and the Archaeological Remains of Sarnath. The archaeological complex includes the Dhamek Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa, Mulagandhakuti Vihara and the Ashokan Pillar.
Together, these monuments represent a historic landscape that developed over nearly 16 centuries.
Sarnath’s Journey to UNESCO Recognition
Sarnath’s path to World Heritage status began decades ago. The site was included in India’s Tentative List of World Heritage in 1998, before India submitted its formal nomination to the World Heritage Committee in January 2025.
The nomination subsequently underwent an 18-month evaluation process involving technical discussions with UNESCO’s advisory bodies and an evaluation mission by the International Council on Monuments and Sites, or ICOMOS.
Sarnath was nominated under UNESCO criteria (iii) and (vi). The first recognises its enduring spiritual importance as a major Buddhist pilgrimage destination, while the second acknowledges its direct association with significant events in Buddha’s life, particularly his first sermon and meeting with his first disciples.
Significance for India and the Buddhist World
Sarnath remains an important pilgrimage destination for Buddhists from countries including Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Vietnam, South Korea, Cambodia and Mongolia.
Its UNESCO recognition therefore carries significance beyond heritage conservation. It strengthens India’s cultural connections with Buddhist communities and countries across Asia.
With Sarnath’s inscription, three of the four principal Buddhist pilgrimage sites associated with Buddha’s life are now UNESCO World Heritage sites. The other two are Lumbini in Nepal and the Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh Gaya in Bihar.
Protecting Sarnath for Future Generations
The new UNESCO status also brings greater responsibility for protecting Sarnath’s authenticity and integrity.
The Government has stated that tourism will be managed sustainably and that unplanned development within the site’s buffer zone will be prevented. The objective is to preserve Sarnath’s Outstanding Universal Value for future generations.
The UNESCO World Heritage framework is based on the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, under which heritage of exceptional significance is considered to have value for humanity as a whole.
